Evidence is presented in several of the papers listed that local food is not necessarily less greenhouse gas-intensive, since most of the GHG emissions (83% according to one study) are caused by the production of the food itself - i.e., in the pre- transportation stage. Farm practices (organic vs conventional), fertilizer use, type of livestock feed (grass or grain), and the GHG intensity of consumers' diets are more significant factors than food miles in determining the carbon "foodprint".
