Standard Bearers looks at actual evidence of smallholder exclusion and the costs and benefits of inclusion in demanding export markets. It also explores opportunities to adapt requirements and develop approaches with lower costs to make private standards more beneficial to, and inclusive of, small-scale growers. Among the chapters are titles on virtual water exports, the role of air-freighted export horticulture in alleviating poverty, and the relatively new concept of "fair miles" as opposed to "food miles" in what can be a simplistic response to concerns over air emissions. Lots of food for thought here.
