The mission of the White Earth Land Recovery Project (WELRP) is to facilitate recovery of the original land base of the White Earth Indian Reservation, while preserving and restoring traditional practices with projects such as the on-reservation Farm to School program, the campaign to protect Wild Rice from genetic contamination, and the Mino-Miijim Good Food Program, which promotes traditional foods for diabetes prevention. Winona LaDuke is the organization's founding director. Since 2004, WELRP has organized an Indigenous Farming Conference for the purpose of nurturing, restoring and creating Indigenous farming and food economies as well as food sovereignty in the Great Lakes region. WELRP's website also features an online store, called Native Harvest, selling items ranging from wild rice, jellies, hominy and buffalo to birch bark baskets.
